Welcome to the Stage Combat Mailing List!

The following information covers the use of this mailing list and how to get a help file for the list. The help file includes information on subscribing and unsubscribing from this list. Please put a copy of this information in a safe place for future reference.

1. What is this mailing list about?
The Stage Combat Mailing List is a forum for folks involved in theatrical stage combat to discuss the various aspects of the art.
2. Who maintains this list?
The list is maintained by some guy named Alan Reichert. Noting a lack of mailing lists for the art of stage combat, and being aware of at least one failed attempt at a Usenet Newsgroup for the subject, Alan set up a list server on his own machine to provide this forum.
3. What can we talk about?
Anything that pertains to the art of stage combat! This includes techniques, training, public relations, announcements of upcoming stage combat events, and, with exceptions noted in item 4 below, places to receive training and obtain stage combat supplies.
4. What shouldn't we talk about?
Stuff that doesn't pertain to the art. (Duhh!) And don't try to hold a discussion on the advantages of Cathedral Ceilings in architecture ("Makes it easy to swing a Claymore indoors.") That is a stretch! :-)
Flames are, of course, highly discouraged. If participants are in vigorous disagreement on a point and wish to take to each other's throats, do so via private e-mail. I'm not condoning flames, but I'm aware that they occasionally occur and don't want them on this list. I realize that there will be occasional slips. However, if a flame war ensues on the list, other paticipants may suggest that the flamers take their discussion to private channels. If a flame war persists on the lists, I reserve the right to cancel the flamers' subscriptions until they learn to behave and act like good combatants. ;-)
Also, blatant advertising is frowned upon. I am aware that some participants may be involved in stage combat training or the creation/sale of stage combat equipment. If they wish to respond to someone else's request for information about obtaining equipment or training, that is acceptable as long as the response doesn't turn into an advertising campaign. Messages sent to the list simply to advertise wares... well, let's not. This server has files that list various organizations involved in stage combat and companies that provide supplies and services to the stage combat community. See section 6 below for information.
5. What about the list server?
For those inclined to computer geekdom, the server is a 486 machine running Linux. The list server has been set up on this machine as a service to those interested in the art of Stage Combat. The server is not part of a business and does not have a 24-hour-a-day/7-day-a-week requirement. Therefore, there may be times when the server is taken down for extended periods of time for maintenance, upgrade, bad weather (fear of power interrupts), etc. Attempts will be made to minimize disruptions to the list. Connection to the internet is via UUCP which is not a constant connection. Therefore, there may occasionally be large delays between the time you send something to the list and the time a copy returns to your mailbox.
6. Where do I get the FAQ?
FAQ? What FAQ? :-) Right now, this file serves as the FAQ until a real FAQ is written. It is on my List Of Things To Do.
7. Administrative Information:
HELP FILE: If you need help with the commands for the stage-combat mailing list, send e-mail to majordomo@mattress.atww.org with the word "help" in the body of the message (no quotes).
SUBSCRIPTIONS: To subscribe to the mailing list, send e-mail to majordomo@mattress.atww.org with the phrase "subscribe stage-combat " in the body of the message (no quotes). Once you subscribe, you will receive another message showing the e-mail address for the actual list, and instructions on how to unsubscribe from the list if needed.
UNSUBSCRIBE: To unsubscribe from the mailing list, send e-mail to majordomo@mattress.atww.org with the phrase "unsubscribe stage-combat" in the body of the message (no quotes). Do NOT send unsubscribe requests to the list. Also, do NOT send them to the list administrator unless you have tried the "normal" method first and are having difficulties getting off of the list.
BOUNCES: Occasionally, for various reasons, e-mail to an account will bounce back to the list administrator. If an address seems to bounce a majority of messages sent to it, the list administrator may remove your account from the list. If you stop receiving mail from the list, but have not unsubscribed yourself from it, contact the list administrator at the address at the end of this message.
VACATIONS/EXTENDED ABSENCE: If you plan on being away from your e-mail account for a while, please unsubscribe from this list. Some systems only allow a certain number of message in an e-mail inbox, then start refusing any more. These refused message come back to the list administrator who may then remove your e-mail address from the list. You can subscribe again when you return and, if you'd like, get the archive for the time you missed.
FILE INDEX: A list of available files may be retrieved by sending an e-mail message to majordomo@mattress.atww.org with the phrase "index stage-combat" (no quotes) in the body of the message.
ADMINISTRATION: If you subscribe to the list but do not get any responses, or if you stop receiving mail from the list, or you just need to contact a real person for some reason, send e-mail to owner-stage-combat@mattress.atww.org.
DIGESTS: The Stage Combat Mailing List is also available in digest format. A digest is generated a minimum of once per day. If the list is very active, then there may be more than one digest per day. To subscribe to the digest format, send e-mail to majordomo@mattress.atww.org with the phrase "subscribe stage-combat-digest" in the body of the message (no quotes).
POSTS: List members occasionally quote previous messages for reference. Please limit the amount of previous message included in your message. Include just enough to prod memories, but don't quote the whole thing! Nobody wnats to read the same message 4 times, and it only fills up the digest version unnecessarily. Also, if your .sig is quite long (more than 5 lines), please trim them or turn them off when sending to the list. Long .sigs also are an unnecessary addition to the digest version.
Enjoy! Alan Reichert, Administrator
